Position Overview
The Primary Swimming and General Physical Education Teacher is responsible for delivering a high-quality, engaging, and inclusive physical education programme for primary-aged students, with a particular focus on swimming instruction and water safety. The successful candidate will promote lifelong participation in physical activity while supporting students' physical, social, and emotional development within an international bilingual learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
Plan, deliver, and assess high-quality swimming and physical education lessons aligned with the school's curriculum and learning outcomes.
Teach swimming across a range of abilities, from beginners to more advanced swimmers.
Develop students' water confidence, swimming technique, water safety awareness, and personal survival skills.
Deliver a broad physical education curriculum that includes fundamental movement skills, team sports, individual activities, fitness, and games.
Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners and support students of varying abilities.
Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that encourages participation, confidence, and resilience.
Monitor, assess, and report on student progress in accordance with school assessment policies.
Student Welfare and Safety
Maintain the highest standards of safety during all swimming and physical education lessons.
Conduct regular risk assessments and ensure all activities comply with school health and safety procedures.
Supervise students responsibly in swimming pool and sports facilities.
Promote positive behaviour, teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship.
Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow safeguarding and child protection procedures at all times.
Curriculum Development
Contribute to the ongoing development and review of the Primary PE and Swimming curriculum.
Integrate inquiry-based learning and cross-curricular opportunities where appropriate.
Support the development of whole-school health and wellbeing initiatives.
Extracurricular Activities
Organise and lead extracurricular sports clubs and swimming programmes.
Coach school teams and prepare students for competitions, festivals, and sporting events.
Assist with sports days, swimming galas, house competitions, and other school events.
Professional Responsibilities
Participate fully in staff meetings, professional development, and school training.
Work collaboratively with colleagues across both English and Chinese departments.
Build positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.
Maintain accurate attendance, assessment, and reporting records.
Contribute positively to the wider life of the school community.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Sports Science, Education, or a related field.
Recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, QTS, teaching licence, or equivalent).
Current swimming teaching qualification from a recognised governing body.
Valid First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
Essential Experience
Experience teaching primary-aged students.
Experience delivering structured swimming lessons.
Strong classroom and behaviour management skills.
Experience working within an international or bilingual school is desirable.
Knowledge and Skills
Excellent knowledge of primary physical education and swimming pedagogy.
Strong understanding of child development and age-appropriate physical activity.
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting student wellbeing.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
