Up to 20 extra days Job Description Under the supervision of the Director of Student Placement and in collaboration with the Senior Director of School Counseling, the school counselor will obtain and review all pertinent student records and administer placement and/or screening tests. This information, in conjunction with educational history information, will be used to provide recommendations for student placement.
We serve approximately 22,000 students at 37 elementary, middle, and high schools. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Combined, our students and families speak 55 different languages and hail from 91 countries of origin. REPORTS TO: Delvi Martinez, Director of Student Placement & Gina Silvia, Director of School Counseling. **Contingent upon funding** Education Training and Exeperience: - Master's degree in School Counseling from an accredited college or university (Preferred)
- Bilingual Spanish preferred
- Experience analyzing and interpreting national and international transcripts
RIDE Certification Requirements: - RI School Counselor certification
ESL Certification Preferred
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND CURRICULAR LINKAGE: - Obtain previous students' transcripts- national and international
- Analyze grades, transcripts, and all academic records and consult with students and parents as needed
- Complete a credit audit for all incoming high school students
- Review middle school report cards and recommend for specialized programming or additional supports as needed.
- Analyze and award credits for international transcripts with guidance from the Office of MLLs
- Interpret assessment data to determine appropriate placement to support individual student need
- Complete and explain the transcript analysis to determine grade level placement
- Collaborate with the previous school counseling department, district, and/or Department of Education for clarification and appropriate interpretation for transcript analysis
- Assist with student scheduling based on individual student needs and determine if credit recovery is needed.
- Determine school placement based on individual student need
- Make appropriate referrals and recommendations based on credit audit and assessments
- Collaborate with schools, parents/guardians, and students regarding placement recommendations
- Provide guidance on school programs- i.e. CTE, MLL, special education, and advanced academic services
- Guide students and families on course offerings, course sequence, and school schedules
- Review and explain graduation requirements
- Counsel students regarding educational and career planning
- Confer with community agencies as needed
- Serve as a resource to parents (e.g., information sharing)
- Consult with the Teaching and Learning, Office of Multilingual Learners, and Office of Student Programming when necessary and appropriate
- Provide students ineligible for enrollment with resources for support and continuing education
- Perform other duties as designated by the supervisor
Please note that the schedule for the additional 20 days will be determined by the Director of Student Placement (in consultation with the employee) to better support the needs of students during peak times.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS: - Bilingual Spanish preferred
- Minimum of 3 years' experience as a school counselor
- Experience analyzing and awarding credit for national and international transcripts
- Proficiency in the use of the PPSD Student Information System- Skyward
