Lab Assistant

Responsibilities

• Sort and receive specimens in the laboratory department.
• Perform routine instrument maintenance on laboratory equipment.
• Conduct tasks such as centrifuging specimens, printing extra labels, recording data, and storing or retrieving specimens.
• Prepare reagents and media necessary for testing procedures.
• Prepare specimens at workstations, including building worklists, aliquoting, checking for clots and fibrin, inoculating, and slide preparation.
• Perform quality assurance and quality control duties as assigned.
• Resolve pending lists and locate missing samples.
• Decontaminate work areas and perform weekly radioactive wipe tests.
• Maintain laboratory files and records.
• Change gas cylinders and follow all PPE and safety regulations.
• Operate the laboratory computer system and PCs, and dispose of biohazardous material.
• Complete required training and competency checklists.

Required Skills

• Ability to establish work priorities and handle multiple tasks efficiently.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to retain information.
• Effective communication skills to interact courteously with coworkers and customers.
• Basic understanding of laboratory procedures and safety protocols.

Additional Skills & Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; medical assistant training is helpful.
• Mathematics and science courses preferred.
• No prior work experience required.
• Availability for first shift, with some weekend hours possible.
• Must pass a color vision test and provide a copy of educational diploma.
